Behind the Work

“One of the first things my husband Andy made for me when we first set up Stoff Studios in 2015 was a blank wooden printing block which I originally planned to carve into. I was playing around with the block in the studio and realised that this very simple piece of equipment allows me to create endless, one-off mono prints. I've always loved how this way of printing captures so many unexpected textures and details; It’s a great way to paint an object in a suitably rustic way. The “Taverna” series is an absolute joy to make, and I hope in a way it serves as a reminder of wine or water poured from jugs whilst sat by the sea bathed in sunshine.”

Behind the Process

“Taverna” is a first-ever, experimental series of block-printed artworks by Carys Briggs of London design duo, Stoff Studios. Block printing or woodblock printing is the historic practice of stamping text, patterns or images onto a surface with an engraved block of wood. Contemporizing this traditional method of printing which dates back to 220 AD, Carys takes a smooth, curved piece of wood, to which she distributes a generous layer of paint atop its surface. Then, using a large wooden stick, she carves out an image in the paint, and then presses the drawing into a generously thick paper to create an entirely unique, one-off artwork. As Carys individually draws a new object each time she paints onto the woodblock, each artwork is unique in its own shape and characteristic.

Emphasizing each work’s individuality by displaying two side by side, these affordable original artworks show their aesthetic strength in pairs: a perfect addition to a mantle, bedside or desk space.

Purchasing an Original Artwork

We work closely with our artists to ensure that your original artwork is securely packaged and shipped directly from us to you. Each original artwork varies in medium and size, and therefore may require special instruction for the care and longevity of the artwork. We understand that purchasing an original work of art is a special investment, so please feel free to email us for all enquiries and added specifications about the work. 

Certificate of Authenticity

Each original artwork is signed by the artist and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the founder of Fount art.textile.

Shipping + Returns

The “Taverna” series is shipped directly from our studio in London. For Mainland UK orders, your work will be shipped immediately with tracked, priority shipping via Royal Mail. For international orders, our shipping estimates vary dependent on the destination, however the artwork should arrive in approximately 1-2 week’s time (pending delays). We also kindly remind our international clients that the cost of overseas shipping differs to our standard shipping rates. This may result in a small surcharge after checkout.
